Day Five - Salamanca, Bonorong and Richmond
The kids have had a busy day in southern
Tasmania. We started the morning in Hobart where several students were
surprised to learn that we were visiting the Salamanca Markets (not the
Salamander Markets as they supposed). They made themselves busy among the
stalls trying a range of foods including Indonesian street food, salmon
sausages and French crepes.
The jewellery vendors were very popular
among the girls, as was a certain photogenic pianist busking between the food
wagons. The boys had fun eating and checking out the weird and wonderful on
offer. Jakob went back for seconds at the Dutch pancake shop and Akeen found a
new love for apple donuts.
Most were reluctant to leave the markets
but glad to arrive at our next destination – Bonorong Wildlife Park. The
highlight of the tour was meant to be the Tasmanian devil feeding, but our
group was just as excited to pet the koala and stroke the wombat’s rump. The wildlife park specialises in rehabilitating injured
animals and is also an important genetic reserve for the Tasmania devil
population suffering from facial tumour disease.
We finished the day at Richmond where we
met a former student, Jacob, at Old Hobart Town. After a quick catch up, the
students were issued with clipboards and enjoyed hunting for historical clues
among a model village of Hobart in the 1820s. We then explored Richmond and posed
for a photo in front of Australia’s oldest standing bridge.
We finished the evening with a generous
plate of lasagne and salad. This was followed by a devotion focussed on Christ’s
claim to be the Way, the Truth and the Life. Most students participated and a
large group stayed back to extend the conversation for another hour.
We are back at Blue Lagoon tonight
preparing for a tour of Port Arthur tomorrow. Our bus journey has been enhanced
by Mr Xeros’ DVD showing of Marcus Clarke’s “For The Term of His Natural Life.” It is an old miniseries about an English gentleman wrongly sentenced to
transportation at Port Arthur. For those awake long enough to see the film it
should provide a context for tomorrow’s visit.
Following up on the photos from yesterday’s
ziplining at Hollybank - we have only received photos for one of our three
groups. This group’s photos have now been posted to yesterday’s blog. As the
others become available, I will post them to Day 4.
The students are all well and enjoying
their trip, but many are looking forward to seeing home again soon.
Happy shopping all, Was the koalas coat as soft as eby,s Sophie, love Dad
ReplyDeleteI see sunshine in the photos from Salamanca Place! Nice to see your natural curls Aimee, humidity suits you!! Mostly a pleasant spring-like weekend in Wagga this weekend, unlike the -2C we experienced as we waved you off last Tuesday morning.
ReplyDeleteAs Grandma and I strolled down to the golf club for a coffee this morning, we passed a number of magpies foraging under the eucalypts, plotting their springtime offensive. They are looking forward to your return! Those plump buds on the trees are bursting into flower too so save some memory on you camera.
Dad and I worked through this riddle this morning, see if you can work it out (and you don't have a phone, ha!)…
A man has to get a live fox, a live chicken, and a sack of corn across the river. He has a rowboat and can only carry himself and one other thing. If the fox and the chicken are left together, the fox will eat the chicken. If the chicken and corn are left together the chicken will eat the corn. How does he do it?
Love you lots, Mum, Dad (whose fox has a tummy full of chicken!), and Matthew (who successfully transported all three safely across the river!). xxx
Hi audrey,
ReplyDeleteThe markets looked great & looked sunny while you’ll there too. What did you buy? Anything for me from one of the jewellery stores. Can never have too many earrings..
Dad & I took Thomas to footy today at Robo oval, they beat the tigers so through to finals. Yay..
just going to cook some dinner, the 2 minions will be home in a minute.. no doubt tired n feral! I think we are going to try to start marking lambs tomorrow, some of them are so big... yet some ewes are still lambing.
I only realised last night that you come home Tuesday afternoon, I thought it was Monday & even ask dad but I was abit sad I had to wait another day. I must read notes better..
Hope you are having such a wonderful time, learning more about your fellow class group & discovering the values of life. Luv you lots mum .. ( dad said he misses his stock girl ) xo
Sounds like my sort of market Samson! Roosters won 42-6. Ethan won Jersey Flegg in NZ. Enjoy your last day in Tassie! See you very soon, we can't wait. Missy is looking for you. Lots of love from us!
ReplyDeleteEvening Amy and all! Only two more sleeps until you hit Wagga! So looking forward to hearing about your adventures! Pray for Calvin - Physics tomorrow. Abster made a chocolate hedgehog slice this arvo. We just tried it and it tastes great! I'm pretty sure there will be plenty left for when you arrive home on Tuesday.
ReplyDeleteI think tomorrow is going to be pretty chilly both here and in Tassie. Stay warm and dry, see you soon!! love and prayers, Mum and Dad
Hi Indi! I hope you have had a fun day. Spare a thought for me who has had a very 'football' weekend. Reuben played Rugby yesterday & they are through to the Grand Final next weekend, Brisbane Lions beat Geelong by a point in a nail biter (you could imagine the screaming!) & then last night North Melbourne smashed Port Adelaide by 86 points with Ben Brown kicking 10 goals!! You could imagine Dad! I have checked your phone & I can't see any Kpop news so everything must be well in the Kpop world :) Looking forward to seeing you on Tuesday, enjoy the rest of your time together, love Mum x
